An aspect of our Rehabilitation and Resettlement Project is the care and wellbeing of the increasing numbers of Converts to Islam in the HMP’s spread across the whole of the UK. Research informs us that, of the 96,000 (approx.) prisoners currently in the UK an alarming number, 14,000, are Muslim. Of this figure 29%, or 1/3^rd, are Converts to Islam who, for the most part, have converted to Islam while serving a sentence in Prison.

Research informs us that those who convert to Islam in Prison seek to do so mainly for 'goodness' sake or for 'piety', while others hoped it would assist them towards ‘emotionally coping’ with prison life and others for the sake of seeking out ‘good company.’   As Muslims we have a responsibility towards these Convert Muslims and must provide suitable literature for them so that they arrive at an understanding of Islam that supports their conversion and is relevant to them while serving their sentence and assists them in coping with the prison environment.

‘Being Muslim’ by Dr Asad Tarsin is the ideal reading material for those new to Islam and towards arriving at a well-grounded appreciation of the tenants of Islam and their application to daily life. The Convert Muslim Foundation kindly requests your assistance in our drive to be able to provide five copies of this book to every prison across the whole of the UK. The cost of the project is £6,000 (120 prisons x 5 books @ £10 per copy). Please assist us in this lofty goal as we hope it will be a means towards changing mindsets, belief and behaviour in an effort to help these returning citizens in their post release Rehabilitation and Resettlement into community and become positive and contributing members of society.
