Bushra Hussain was born in Azad Kashmir and has lived most of her life in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, UK after emigrating with her parents at the age of 6 months. She was the first in her family to obtain a degree in her chosen field of Pharmacy and graduated from the University of Bradford.

In 2013, after the birth of her first child, Bushra searched avidly for a beautifully illustrated, age appropriate book to teach her daughter about Islam from a loving, positive perspective and struggled to find anything she liked. In 2015 Bushra and her family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. They moved back to England in 2018 with more children than they left with and a book that 5 years after conception was ready for printing, alhamdulillah!

Bushra is the director of Islamic Beginnings – an independent publishing house dedicated to providing good quality Islamic resources showing Allah’s love and mercy. My Islam A-Z is her debut publication which was both written and hand-illustrated by Bushra herself. It was published on the 3^rd Dec 2018.

She has visited two state schools in Oxfordshire to speak about her journey as an author, illustrator and self-publisher as well as to speak about Islam. She is looking forward to resuming sessions at schools and with other groups such as Scouts once things settle down with the Covid-19 situation. As well as the above, and most importantly, Bushra is a mother to a terrific trio of girls! She is an advocate for breast-feeding (especially raising rates in ethnic minority families), and in her spare time volunteers to support mothers and their babies. She values honesty, fair trade and environmental consciousness in business practice and looks forward to her future in the publishing and creative industries.
